The Indian Premier League is a revolutionary idea brought by the Board of Control of Cricket in India after the Indian team won the 2007 T20 World Cup. The success of the tournament and a thrilling finale made sure the cricket enthusiasts are glued to the TV sets anticipating fast-paced action. 

The IPL brought foreign and international players together in one team, which was a completely different experience for world cricket and fans alike. A package of glamor, entertainment and T20 cricket proved to be a major success, as the cash-rich league became widely popular in India and other cricketing nations. 

The different boards term IPL as the benchmark to get their players a competitive T20 tournament, so they can improve as a player in subcontinent conditions under pressure. With the 16th IPL season, the IPL is growing leaps and beyond, and is ranked in the top five most valuable franchise leagues in the world. 

On that note, let’s discuss the IPL champions list from the 2008 until 2022 season. 

List of All IPL Champions

2008: Rajasthan Royals made it to the playoffs with 12 wins in 14 league matches. Then, they won by 105 runs against Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in the semi-finals. The final witnessed RR securing a victory by three wickets against Chennai Super Kings, with Yusuf Pathan’s all-round brilliance of 56 runs and three wickets.

2009: Deccan Chargers finished fourth in the league stage points table with seven wins in 14 matches. However, they prevailed over Delhi Daredevils in the penultimate stage and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final to secure a title victory. They scored 143 and won by six runs against RCB, with Pragyan Ojha picking three wickets. 

2010: With seven victories in 14 games, the MS Dhoni-led CSK were third in the table. In the final, they posted 168 on the board against Mumbai Indians, and then defended it well to win by 22 runs. Suresh Raina was adjudged as Player of the Match for a fifty and a solitary wicket. 

2011: CSK finished at the second position in the table with nine wins in 14 league matches. In the final, CSK posted 205, with Murali Vijay scoring 95. Then, Ravichandran Ashwin picked three wickets, as he has put the team’s name on the IPL all champions list for the second time. 

2012: With 10 wins in 16 matches, Kolkata Knight Riders came second in the league stage. In the final, they met CSK. The Chennai-based franchise posted 190 on the board, but KKR managed to chase down the score in a thrilling fashion, with Manvinder Bisla scoring 89. 

2013: This season proved to be an important juncture for Rohit Sharma’s career, who was chosen as captain of MI, midway in the tournament. MI finished second with 11 wins in 16 matches. They got better of CSK by 23 runs to clinch their maiden IPL title. 

2014: Under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, KKR won nine of their 14 league matches. They met Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the final, who posted 199 on the board. Nevertheless, Manish Pandey hit 94 to pave the way for KKR to tie with CSK for most ipl champions list. 

2015: MI somehow qualified for the playoffs with eight wins in 14 league matches. However, Lendl Simmons (68) and Mitchell McClenaghan (3 wickets) helped them to win by 41 runs against CSK and be crowned as the champion of IPL. 

2016: Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore won eight matches each in the league stage, and met in the final after their respective semi-final victories. In a topsy-curvy game, SRH posted 208 and won by eight runs. Ben Cutting scored 39* and also took two wickets. 

2017: In this season, Mumbai Indians emerged as the best team in the league stage with 10 wins in 14 occasions. Despite scoring 129, MI emerged as the champions by one run against Rising Pune Supergiant, with Krunal Pandya scoring 47. MI topped the all IPL champion list with three title victories. 

2018: Next on the IPL champion team list were CSK, who made a roaring comeback in the 2018 season to win nine out of 14 league matches. Then they won by eight wickets against SRH in the final stage of the tournament. Shane Watson remained unbeaten on 117*. 

2019: MI topped the points table with nine wins in 14 matches. In a riveting final encounter, Mumbai posted 148 on the board. Then, their bowling unit, led by Jasprit Bumrah (2 wickets) helped MI to clinch the title by one run. 

2020: In this season, Mumbai were crowned as the team with most IPL champions list. They restricted Capitals to a total of 156, with Trent Boult picking three wickets. Then, Rohit scored 68 to win a trophy for the team. 

2021: CSK finished second on the points table with nine wins in 14 league matches this season. In the final, they posted 192 on the board, with Faf du Plessis scoring 86. Thereafter, Shardul Thakur picked three wickets to lead the way for CSK to add a fourth trophy in the IPL T20 champions list. 

2022: In their debut year, Gujarat Titans impressed with 10 wins in 14 league matches. Then, they faced Rajasthan Royals in the final, who posted only 130 on the board, thanks to Pandya’s triple strike. Then, Shubman Gill (45), Pandya (34*), David Miller (32*) were clinical to secure a title for Titans. d

IPL Champions and Runners-Up List

IPL Most Champions List

Mumbai tops the all IPL champions list with five titles victories under their belt. They won the tournament in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Chennai is second on the IPL all time champions list with four trophies in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. 

Kolkata Knight Riders is third with two titles in 2012 and 2014. Rajasthan Royals (2008) and Gujarat Titans (2022) have won one IPL title each. 

IPL Cup Champions List

The IPL cup tournament, also known as Champions League T20 brought champions of T20 leagues originating from different cricketing nations such as India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka. It gave a chance for the viewers to witness top teams from around the world facing off each other. 

Here are the winners of all CLT20 from 2009 to 2014. 

• 2009 – New South Wales Blues

New South Wales posted 159 on the board against Trinidad & Tobago and won the game by 41 runs. Brett Lee scored 48 and took two wickets for NSW. 

• 2010 – Chennai Super Kings

CSK restricted Warriors to a total of 128, with Muttiah Muralitharan taking three wickets. Then, Murai Vijay and Michael Hussey scored fifties each to register a title victory. 

• 2011 – Mumbai Indians

MI faced RCB in the final of the CLT20 2011 season. They scored 139, with James Franklin top-scoring with 41. Then, Harbhajan Singh scalped three wickets to win the game for MI. 

• 2012 – Sydney Sixers

Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Mccullum picked three wickets apiece for Sixers against Lions. Then, Michael Lumb (82*) and Brad Haddin (37*) helped the team to win the game by 10 wickets. 

• 2013 – Mumbai Indians

MI were up against the challenge of Royals in the final showdown. They posted 202 with Dwayne Smith (42) and Glenn Maxwell (37). Then, Harbhajan Singh (four wickets) and Kieron Pollard (three wickets) helped MI to win the game by 33 runs. 

• 2014 – Chennai Super Kings

In the final season of CLT20 2014, CSK chased down the target of 181 against KKR, with Suresh Raina scoring 109*. In the bowling unit, Pawan Negi picked a five-fer. 

After this season, the tournament was shelved due to the dip in viewership and clash with the international calendar, with IPL already taking close to two months every year. 

Conclusion

Certainly, the Indian Premier League has been a successful tournament since 2008 and has brought profits to the BCCI, team owners and the sponsors. It perfectly fit into the scheme of things after India’s T20 World Cup and brought a nice template, for the other boards to follow and organize their leagues.

The likes of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma have become the legendary figures in the IPL due to their success as a captain. Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal are some of the names who shone bright for the Indian team after doing well in the IPL.

Chennai still remain the most popular due to the presence of MS Dhoni in 2022. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also have a huge fan following. It will be interesting to see if Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals can go all the way like the 2022 season.
